You’ve already seen them all over town, construction signs, cranes, and workers building all over Portland. Here to talk about the boom in construction in Portland is real estate expert Nick Krautter from Keller Williams Real Estate and

Q. There’s been a lot of talk of apartment building but how many buildings are really being built?

A. I spoke with one developer that said there are close to 6,000 units in the pipeline. Some of these are in large apartments and some are in new plexes being built. In a lot of the close in areas old buildings are being demolished and vacant lots are being built. However you slice it there are a lot more projects happening now than in the last couple years.

Q. What about single family homes?

A. Most of the infill homes are selling before they’re finished and even in the suburbs new homes are in short supply. Some builders tell me they’re having trouble keeping up with demand.

Q. This sounds like great news but is there a backlash to all this new building?

A. Yes! In many close in areas apartments are being built with little or no parking and neighbors are crying foul. Many of the higher density zones don’t require parking and developers are maximizing the number of units they can put on a lot.
